Has anyone experienced this situation with the 9th generation Camry? When reversing, I heard a bang, like hitting something, and the handbrake automatically engaged. I checked around and didn't find anything hit.

The gear lever on this company car is problematic. After shifting to reverse, the detent stays in the engaged position even when you return it to neutral. You have to push it down to disengage. I didn't pay attention today, and when coasting downhill while pressing the clutch, I directly shifted to first gear without pushing the detent down. As a result, the car stalled and now it won't start at all.

If the car wasn't completely stopped before shifting into reverse and you heard a grinding noise, it could potentially cause damage. It's generally recommended to ensure the vehicle is fully stationary before changing gears to avoid any harm to the transmission system.
