Mercedes-AMG Enters the Era of the Super Electric SUV: Over 1,000 Horsepower and Advanced Technology

Mercedes-AMG, the high-performance and luxury arm of Mercedes-Benz, is preparing to make a dramatic leap in the world of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) by developing its first independently produced super electric SUV. This bold move comes amid intensifying competition with leading brands such as Lotus and Porsche, specifically to rival models like the Lotus Eletre and Porsche Cayenne Electric, in a market that is rapidly shifting toward high-performance electric vehicles.

A New Beginning: The AMG.EA Electric Platform

The new vehicle is currently known as the “Electric GT SUV,” a name that may be officially adopted upon its launch. The car is expected to reach markets in the UK and Europe in 2027, becoming the first electric SUV developed by AMG independently, separate from traditional Mercedes-Benz platforms. It will be built on the all-new AMG.EA platform, which will first be used in the production version of the highly anticipated Vision AMG electric sedan in 2026.

This platform features advanced 800-volt electrical technology, enabling faster charging and greater energy efficiency, as well as unprecedented dynamic capabilities in the electric vehicle segment.

Tremendous Power: Advanced Axial-Flux Motors

One of the most distinctive features of this vehicle is its use of advanced axial-flux electric motors, developed in collaboration with the British company Yasa, which is owned by Mercedes-Benz. These motors are capable of generating up to 480 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque each, with the possibility of equipping the car with a dual- or tri-motor system, bringing the total output to over 1,000 horsepower.

This immense performance puts the car in direct competition with super models like the Lotus Eletre R, which produces 906 horsepower, and even surpasses it in some technical aspects. AMG asserts that these axial-flux motors will provide the car with instant response and astonishing acceleration, as well as higher thermal and electrical efficiency than conventional motors.

Spy photos reveal that the car’s exterior design will clearly carry AMG’s identity, with a bold front fascia featuring a modern interpretation of the iconic AMG Panamericana grille and 3D headlights with the signature three-pointed star motif. The car will also feature wide wheel arches, prominent rear fenders, and hidden door handles for improved aerodynamics, similar to what we’ve seen in the EQE SUV and EQS SUV models.

The vehicle is expected to be equipped with the latest Mercedes intelligent driving systems, including a massive panoramic display spanning the dashboard, integrated entertainment and connectivity systems, and advanced driver assistance technologies such as semi-autonomous driving and active safety systems.

In terms of batteries, the SUV will use a high-density battery pack supporting fast charging, with a special focus on improving driving range and reducing weight—a key challenge in the super electric vehicle segment.

Despite all these technologies and capabilities, there are real challenges facing this type of vehicle. The market is still developing, and issues such as heavy weight, maintenance costs, and battery prices remain major obstacles for high-performance electric vehicles. Additionally, the target customer base is relatively limited, as some still prefer SUVs with powerful internal combustion engines for their traditional sound and performance.
