Nissan has announced a massive recall affecting 443,899 vehicles across several popular models including the Nissan Rogue, Altima, and Infiniti QX50 and QX55, due to the risk of failure in the advanced VC-Turbo engine. This recall is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to ensure customer safety and maintain vehicle quality in the market.

Nissan issues a large recall for thousands of vehicles due to potential VC-Turbo engine issues affecting safety and performance.

What is the VC-Turbo Engine and Why Is It Special?

The VC-Turbo engine is an innovative Nissan powertrain featuring a Variable Compression Ratio system, the first of its kind in commercial production. This system allows the engine to adjust its compression ratio dynamically during operation, optimizing performance between torque output and fuel efficiency depending on driving conditions. The development of this engine spanned roughly two decades and involved around 300 patents.

The 2.0-liter turbocharged VC-Turbo engine first appeared in the Infiniti QX50 in 2019, later adopted by the Nissan Altima. The Nissan Rogue has used a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder variant of this engine since 2021, which is the only engine option available for the Rogue.

Details and Causes of the Recall

According to the recall report submitted to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on June 26, 2025, the issue concerns potential failure of the engine bearings. The report highlights defects in the main engine bearing and connecting rods A, C, and L, which may lead to engine damage or complete failure.

The recall covers:

  • 348,554 units of Nissan Rogue (2021–2024 models)

  • 5,685 units of Nissan Altima (2019–2020 models)

  • 84,536 units of Infiniti QX50 (2019–2022 models)

  • 5,124 units of Infiniti QX55 (2022 model)

Nissan emphasizes that bearing failure is gradual rather than sudden, meaning drivers may notice warning signs before a complete breakdown. These signs include dashboard warning lights, unusual engine noises, or rough engine operation.

Nissan’s Planned Actions

Nissan plans to inspect affected engines at authorized service centers by examining the oil pan for metallic debris indicating bearing wear. For the three-cylinder VC-Turbo engines, if no debris is found, technicians will replace the oil pan gasket, change the engine oil, and reprogram the engine control unit (ECU).

For the four-cylinder VC-Turbo engines, the procedure involves changing the engine oil only if no debris is detected. If metallic debris is found in any engine, Nissan will replace the engine free of charge.

Additionally, Nissan will offer compensation plans for owners whose warranty period has expired.

Recall Timeline

Dealers are expected to be notified by July 15, 2025, and Nissan will begin sending recall notification letters to affected vehicle owners starting August 25, 2025, inviting them to schedule free inspections and repairs at service centers.

Importance and Impact on Customers

This recall is among the largest recent recalls by Nissan, given the popularity of the Rogue in the U.S. market. The company stresses the importance of prompt response to avoid severe engine damage that could cause sudden vehicle shutdown while driving, posing safety risks.

Nissan advises drivers to monitor for any abnormal engine behavior and to visit service centers immediately if symptoms appear.

This recall demonstrates Nissan’s commitment to ensuring vehicle quality and user safety by proactively addressing technical issues that may affect performance and safety. It highlights the importance of keeping up with manufacturer updates and cooperating with authorized service centers to maintain optimal vehicle condition.

If you own a Nissan Rogue, Altima, or Infiniti QX50/QX55 from the specified model years, it is recommended to watch for official notifications and contact your local Nissan dealer to arrange a free inspection.
