Nio has officially unveiled the third generation of its premium electric SUV, the ES8, following its appearance in regulatory filings by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The all new model features a completely redesigned exterior inspired by the luxurious ET9 sedan and is built on the advanced NT3 platform. With noticeable increases in size and major tech upgrades, this version marks the most advanced evolution of the ES8 since its debut in 2017.
Bigger Dimensions and Futuristic Styling
Nio has significantly expanded the physical footprint of the new ES8. It now measures 5280 mm in length, 2010 mm in width, and 1800 mm in height, with a stretched wheelbase of 3130 mm. Compared to the previous generation, which was 5099 mm long, the new design aims to offer a more spacious and refined cabin experience.
Official images confirm the SUV’s exterior borrows heavily from the sleek lines of the ET9 sedan, especially with its new, more aerodynamic front fascia. The tech upgrades are most noticeable in the lidar system, which now includes two side mounted units in addition to the one above the windshield, a major step forward from the previous model that only had a single front facing lidar.
Electrifying Performance and Next Level Charging Tech
The all new Nio ES8 delivers outstanding performance through its dual motor all wheel drive system. It features a 180 kW motor on the front axle and a 340 kW motor at the rear, producing a combined output of 520 kW (697 hp). With a top speed of 220 km/h, the SUV combines refined power with a dynamic driving character.
This electric flagship is equipped with a swappable NMC battery and supports ultra fast charging at 600 kW and 925 volts, with a peak current of 765 amps. According to Nio, this setup allows the vehicle to gain 250 kilometers of range in just five minutes or achieve a full charge in about three minutes using the brand’s signature battery swap service, underscoring Nio’s commitment to innovation and efficiency.
Spacious Cabin with Flexible Seating Options
Although Nio has yet to unveil the full interior of the ES8, spy images reveal a front electric frunk and confirm the availability of two layout options: a 6 seat or 7 seat configuration, just like the previous generation. This flexibility makes the ES8 an appealing choice for families seeking premium comfort and generous space without sacrificing modern tech and elegance.
Sales Slump Despite Premium Positioning
Despite being one of Nio’s flagship models, the ES8 has not lived up to its ambitions in terms of sales in the Chinese market. In May 2025, only 292 units were sold, marking a steep 68.8% year over year drop and a 45.8% decrease compared to April. Between January and May 2025, cumulative sales reached just 2,270 units, reflecting a 35.9% decline from the same period last year.
The current generation ES8 starts at 498,000 yuan (approximately 69,280 USD - 255,019 AED), with the top tier version priced at 598,000 yuan (around 83,200 USD - 306,228 AED). To offset this performance, Nio is preparing to launch a brand new model called the ES9, a large SUV version of the premium ET9 sedan, expected to debut in the first half of 2026.
Launch Expected in Q3 2025
Following its appearance in China's homologation filings, which is typically the final regulatory step before a vehicle hits the market, the new ES8 is expected to launch in the third quarter of 2025. Nio is banking on its futuristic design, powerful electric drivetrain, and cutting edge battery swap and charging technology to revive interest in its flagship SUV and reassert its position in the luxury EV segment.
