Toyota is gearing up to officially launch its all new bZ5 electric SUV on June 10 as part of its partnership with FAW Group in China. This model joins the bZ series and stands as one of the latest fully electric SUVs offered by the Japanese automaker. Having recently rolled off the production line in Tianjin, the bZ5 is now ready to enter one of the most competitive markets, backed by advanced technology, an aggressive design, and a competitive price point, thanks to its collaboration with BYD, a leading name in electric batteries and powertrains.
Futuristic Design and Eye Catching Exterior Details
The Toyota bZ5 showcases a bold design identity inspired by sharp lines and a front fascia reminiscent of a hammerhead shark, giving the SUV an aggressive and dynamic appearance that stands out on the road. Its well proportioned body measures 4780 mm in length, 1866 mm in width, and 1510 mm in height, with a long 2880 mm wheelbase that enhances stability and ensures generous cabin space.
The vehicle’s confident character is further emphasized by sporty 21 inch aluminum wheels and precisely sculpted LED headlights and taillights, adding a modern and refined touch. Inside, the cabin embraces minimalist elegance, highlighted by a 15.6 inch floating central screen that dominates the dashboard and pairs with a fully digital instrument panel to create a high tech cockpit experience.
A panoramic sunroof spanning 1.44 square meters enhances the sense of openness, while customizable ambient lighting with 256 colors adds a luxurious vibe. Comfort is elevated through four dedicated nap modes designed for relaxation during stops or waiting periods. For safety, nine airbags are strategically placed throughout the interior, offering comprehensive protection for all passengers in a variety of driving conditions.
Advanced Electric System and Smart Performance with High Efficiency
The Toyota bZ5 benefits from BYD’s advanced Blade batteries, renowned for their durability under harsh operating conditions and their high energy storage efficiency. This translates directly into improved driving range. The vehicle is powered by a front-mounted electric motor delivering 200 kilowatts (268 horsepower), developed by FinDreams, a BYD subsidiary. This setup ensures lively performance and quick responsiveness suitable for both city driving and highway cruising.
Toyota offers the bZ5 in three electric range configurations. The standard variant delivers up to 550 kilometers on a single charge based on the CLTC cycle, with a starting price under 130,000 Chinese yuan (66,410 AED or 18,000 USD). A second version offers the same range but adds Level 2 (L2) intelligent driving assistance systems, priced under 160,000 yuan (81,735 AED or 22,200 USD). The third option extends the range to 630 kilometers, making it ideal for long distance travel without frequent charging stops.
For intelligent driving, the bZ5 is equipped with the advanced Momenta 5.0 system, which uses 33 sensors to support more than 30 driver assistance functions tailored for urban environments. These include automatic lane keeping, self start and stop, adaptive cruise control, and traffic jam assistance, all contributing to a more relaxed and safer driving experience.
With this integrated package of electric performance and intelligent technology, the Toyota bZ5 positions itself as a key contender in the mid size EV segment. Its partnership with BYD underscores Toyota’s strategic shift toward adopting advanced local solutions that meet the expectations of Chinese consumers, all while maintaining the brand’s reputation for quality, innovation, and reliability.
