Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has officially launched its all-new YU7, the brand’s first electric SUV following the success of its SU7 sedan. The YU7 arrives with bold design, advanced technology, and a clear aim to compete with the Tesla Model Y and other luxury SUVs—yet at a price lower than most rivals. The launch created a sensation in the Chinese market, attracting over 289,000 pre-orders within just one hour of opening reservations.
Sporty and Aerodynamic Exterior Design
The YU7 borrows styling cues from supercars, blending a McLaren-inspired front with Ferrari Purosangue-like rear details. The SUV features a panoramic glass roof, hidden door handles, “waterdrop” headlights with smart air ducts, and dual rear spoilers for a sporty look. It also boasts the largest aluminum hood among production cars and a low drag coefficient of 0.245, thanks to 10 air channels and 19 optimized vents.
Three striking colors are available: Emerald Green, Titanium Silver, and Volcanic Orange, accented by glossy black touches for a premium feel.
Spacious Dimensions and Cargo
The YU7 measures about 5 meters long (4,999 mm), 1,996 mm wide, and 1,600 mm high, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm—shorter than the Tesla Model X by 58 mm, but with a longer wheelbase. It offers 678 liters of rear cargo space (expanding to 1,758 liters with seats folded) plus a 141-liter front trunk (frunk).
Luxurious Digital Cabin
Inside, the YU7 follows a minimalist design philosophy, featuring a massive 16.1-inch central screen and a 43.3-inch “HyperVision” panoramic display on the windshield base, customizable for speed, navigation, or front passenger entertainment.
The cabin includes Nappa leather front seats with zero-gravity function, 10-point massage, and one-touch recline. Rear seats are electrically adjustable with up to 135-degree recline, dual rear entertainment screens, and independent climate control. Other amenities include wireless charging, hidden AC vents, and soft-touch materials throughout.
Power and Performance Options
The YU7 is available in three main trims:
Standard: Rear electric motor with 315 hp (235 kW) and 528 Nm torque, 0–100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, up to 830 km range (CLTC cycle), and a 96.3 kWh battery.
Pro: Dual-motor AWD with 489 hp (365 kW), 770 km range, and 0–100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.
Max: Top-spec with dual motors producing 681 hp (508 kW) and 866 Nm torque, 0–100 km/h in a blistering 3.2 seconds, 101.7 kWh battery, and 760 km range.
The YU7 outperforms the Tesla Model Y in both range and acceleration, with a notable price advantage.
Charging and Mechanical Technology
The YU7 supports fast charging from 10% to 80% in just 12 minutes, and can add up to 620 km of range in 15 minutes. It features a double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension with air springs adjustable in five heights, providing comfort and stability across varied roads. High-performance Brembo four-piston brakes are also standard.
Smart Driving and Safety Technologies
The YU7 comes equipped with the latest autonomous driving systems, including:
Roof-mounted LiDAR sensor
4D millimeter-wave radar
11 high-definition cameras
12 ultrasonic sensors
These systems enable semi-autonomous driving, lane change assist, self-parking, blind-spot monitoring, and collision alerts.
Pricing and Competition
YU7 prices in China start at 253,500 yuan (about $34,500) for the standard trim, up to 329,900 yuan ($44,700) for the Max, making it more affordable than the rival Tesla Model Y, yet offering more advanced features and technology.
Exceptional Market Response
The YU7 made waves at launch, recording over 289,000 orders within the first hour, with exclusive offers for early buyers. These numbers reflect strong consumer confidence in Xiaomi’s ability to deliver a luxurious and practical electric SUV at a competitive price.
Xiaomi’s Future in the EV World
With the huge success of the SU7 and soaring demand for the YU7, Xiaomi continues to strengthen its position as a key new player in the luxury electric vehicle market, focusing on sporty design, advanced digital technologies, and performance that rivals the world’s top brands—all at an accessible price point.
