Saudi Arabia is actively promoting the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) as part of its sustainable development vision, aiming to reduce reliance on traditional fuels. Authorities are working on establishing a comprehensive charging network within key cities to ensure driver convenience and alleviate concerns about battery depletion during commutes. Below, we explore the prominent charging station locations in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, and Mecca, highlighting charging levels and the benefits of EVs over internal combustion engines.

Comprehensive Charging Network in Major Cities

In a joint effort between the Public Investment Fund and the Saudi Electricity Company, an electric vehicle infrastructure company was launched last October to develop rapid charging services. The newest station opened at Riyadh's Roshen Front, featuring two 100 kW chargers offering free charging for a limited time to welcome EV owners.

The expansion plan for 2025 includes installing stations on highways connecting Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam, facilitating uninterrupted long distance journeys.

Charging Levels and Their Impact on Your Daily Schedule

EV charging is categorized into three main levels that determine current strength and required recharging time. Level 1 uses a standard household outlet at 120 volts, generating 1.4 to 3 kW of power, necessitating 8 to 12 hours, depending on battery capacity and condition. Level 2 relies on a 240-volt AC source, offering between 7 and 22 kW over periods ranging from one to eleven hours.

Level 3 is the fastest with direct current (DC), exceeding 100 kW at some stations, allowing a charge from 20% to 80% capacity in approximately 20 to 60 minutes. It's advisable to change your car battery every three years for efficiency and safety.

Notable Charging Locations in Riyadh and Jeddah

In Riyadh, charging stations are strategically placed at several locations, including car facilities, service stations, and recreational areas. Drivers can head to the SASCO Station inside King Khalid International Airport or use charging points outside the Park Hyatt Hotel, Nakheel Mall, Granada Center, Panorama Mall, and The Ritz Carlton Hotel.

In Jeddah, charging points cover King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah Corniche, Hilton Jeddah, Red Sea Mall, and Mall of Arabia, ensuring battery replenishment while shopping or staying at hotels.

Dammam and Mecca's Advantages

Dammam offers a similar network with stations at King Fahd International Airport, Al Danah Mall, Al Othaim Mall, and Dhahran Mall. In Mecca, charging points are available at Abraj Al Bait Towers by Fairmont Hotel and Jabal Omar Hilton Suites, facilitating uninterrupted travel between sacred sites and hotel facilities.

Benefits of Electric Vehicles Over Combustion Engines

Electric vehicles convert about 59% to 62% of supplied energy into propulsion compared to just about 17% to 21% for internal combustion engines. Electric motors provide a quiet driving experience with instant torque response while reducing maintenance costs since they don't require oil changes or exhaust system repairs.

Charging during work or shopping saves time compared to stopping at traditional fuel stations. The Saudi government offers tax incentives encouraging EV purchases, which help reduce total ownership costs.

Future Expansion Plans for Sustainable Mobility

The National Infrastructure Company for Electric Vehicles aims to add high speed charging stations along major routes, as well as regional roads and industrial zones, with plans to integrate charging services into mobile applications for easy appointment booking and charger status updates. This network growth reflects the kingdom's commitment to facilitating EV adoption towards cleaner environments and more sustainable transportation.

This development marks a milestone in Saudi Arabia's green transition journey while paving the way for continued innovation in eco friendly mobility solutions, meeting rising technology demands.
