Recently, self-driving technology company Mobileye made an announcement that the company has terminated the internal development of next-generation LiDAR for autonomous driving systems.
Mobileye said that given the company's substantial progress in EyeQ6-based computer vision perception and the improved performance and clarity of the company's internally developed imaging radar, coupled with the cost-effectiveness of a third-party Time of Flight (ToF) lidar unit, it exceeded expectations.
Mobileye has reevaluated the role of FMCW Lidar technology, in its portfolio and believes that the next generation of FMCW Lidar is not as essential to its roadmap for off-eye autonomous driving systems.

Separately, Mobileye plans to close its LiDAR R&D unit at the end of this year, a move expected to affect about 100 employees.
Meanwhile, Mobileye also emphasized that the decision will not affect any existing customer product programs or product development, and that the company remains committed to its in-house imaging radar development.
