As part of its efforts to strengthen its position in the fast growing electric vehicle market, Chinese automaker Leapmotor has unveiled the refreshed 2026 version of its C16 SUV. The latest update introduces significant changes, including new five seat configurations and reduced pricing, making the model more attractive to a wider range of customers. Backed by Stellantis, this move aligns with Leapmotor’s broader strategy to stay competitive in the evolving clean energy vehicle segment.
Multiple Configurations and Flexible Interior Options
Leapmotor has unveiled the 2026 C16 with a lineup of eight different trims, evenly split between fully electric battery vehicles (BEVs) and extended range electric vehicles (EREVs). The most notable update is the introduction of five seat configurations alongside the existing six seat variants, catering to families and drivers who need a more adaptable interior layout.
Pricing for the EREV models starts at RMB 151,800 (USD 21,130 - AED 77,722) and goes up to RMB 171,800 (AED 87,962). Meanwhile, the BEV versions begin at RMB 161,800 (AED 82,842) and top out at RMB 181,800 (AED 93,082). These new prices reflect a significant drop from the previous generation, which started at RMB 155,800 (AED 79,770), and are also lower than the pre-sale price announced earlier this year of RMB 169,800 (AED 86,938).
Dynamic Performance and Impressive Driving Range
The 2026 C16 retains the same dimensions as its predecessor, measuring 4,915 mm in length, 1,905 mm in width, and 1,770 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,825 mm. This balance between size and proportions ensures both a commanding road presence and a spacious interior for passengers.
In the EREV variants, the C16 combines a 1.5 liter gasoline engine with a rear electric motor delivering 170 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. This setup allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.46 seconds, with a top speed of 170 km/h. On the other hand, the all electric versions are powered by a stronger rear motor rated at 220 kW and 360 Nm of torque, achieving a quicker 0 to 100 km/h sprint in only 6.37 seconds and reaching a top speed of 190 km/h.
Smart Solutions for Daily Driving and Long Distances
The EREV variants of the C16 come equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries available in two capacities: 28.4 kWh and 38.7 kWh. These deliver a pure electric range of 200 km and 280 km, respectively, while the combined range (with a full tank of fuel and battery charge) extends to 1,095 km and 1,150 km, making them ideal for long distance travel.
On the other hand, the fully electric BEV versions are powered by larger LFP battery packs with capacities of 74.9 kWh and 81.9 kWh. These offer impressive CLTC rated driving ranges of 580 km and 630 km, respectively, making the C16 a practical option for daily use without the need for frequent charging.
Rising Sales Reflect Growing Market Presence
Since its initial launch in June 2024, the C16 was first offered exclusively in a six seat configuration. In January 2025, Leapmotor expanded the lineup by adding two long range electric variants, also with six seats, to cater to a wider customer base.
In May of this year alone, the C16 recorded sales of 4,340 units, accounting for 9.6 percent of Leapmotor’s total monthly deliveries. The company reported overall deliveries of 45,067 vehicles in May, marking a 148.10 percent year on year increase and a 9.82 percent rise compared to April. Between January and May, total deliveries reached 173,658 vehicles, reflecting an impressive 160 percent year on year growth, signaling growing customer trust and stronger market penetration.
