At the 2024 Jeddah International Motor Show, Mazda unveiled the CX-90.
This model impressively addresses previous space limitations found in Mazda vehicles with its significantly enhanced dimensions and features a 3.3T powertrain, delivering exceptional performance. However, whether it can truly break new ground and succeed in the fiercely competitive market remains to be seen.
Exterior Design
The CX-90 adopts the latest generation of Mazda’s design language with some refined adjustments. The iconic KODO – Soul of Motion design is evident, with the front featuring a flat, wide grille filled with a black mesh that enhances its sophisticated look.
The side of the vehicle builds on the familial design yet incorporates more modern elements. Slightly sloping rooflines, sharply angled D-pillars, and a prominent trunk design all contribute to a dynamic and poised appearance.
Substantial use of chrome trims along the sides elevates the luxury feel of the vehicle, and the addition of large wheels accentuates a stylish and dynamic presence.
Notably, the CX-90 is one of Mazda’s largest models, with a body length of 5100 millimeters and a wheelbase of 3119 millimeters, ensuring ample interior space and a commanding presence.
The design of the rear is also noteworthy with distinct, layered elements and high recognizability. The declining roofline leads into a large spoiler that adds downforce, while the steep angle of the rear window contrasts sharply with the protruding trunk lines, enhancing the visual depth.
The flat, elongated tail light assembly is distinctive and highly recognizable when lit. The rear bumper is slightly tapered and incorporates chrome trims that mirror the front design, ensuring a cohesive style throughout.
Interior and Comfort
Inside, the CX-90 features an interior design steeped in Mazda’s family style but with modern elements that heighten the sense of technology and luxury.
The front row includes a standard Mazda family design with a floating large screen and dashboard that creates a dual-screen system, full of technological allure and equipped with a HUD for increased driving safety.
The center console features a multi-layered design covered with specially textured panels for a refined touch, raising the level of interior sophistication. Thanks to the enlarged dimensions, the rear seating area is exceptionally spacious, satisfying the needs of several passengers.
The second row consists of two individual seats, each equipped with its own mini-bar, enhancing passenger comfort and convenience. Moreover, these seats support various adjustments, allowing passengers to find their optimal seating position.
The space in the third row is also quite generous, providing sufficient head and legroom for adults, ensuring practicality and comfort even on long journeys.
Engine
Under the hood, the CX-90 is equipped with Mazda's latest powertrain, similar to that found in its other four rear-drive SUV models, offering robust power output.
It features a 3.3T inline-six turbocharged engine with a maximum output of 345 horsepower and a peak torque of 500 newton-meters, making it competitive in its class.
Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the power delivery is smooth, and the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds underscores the vehicle’s luxury status.
Additionally, the new model includes an all-wheel-drive system that enhances handling and stability, providing ample traction even on slippery surfaces.
The Mazda CX-90 is a sincere flagship SUV that marks significant improvements in size, space, and power, overcoming past limitations and demonstrating Mazda's determination to tackle the high-end market.
