At the opening of the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, Lexus unveiled the next generation of its iconic ES model, marking a global debut that reflects the Japanese brand’s firm commitment to a new era combining luxury and electrification. The decision to debut the vehicle in China underscores the strategic importance of the country as the world's largest electric vehicle market, further solidifying Lexus’ ambitions in the realm of sustainable mobility.

This launch introduces the eighth generation of the Lexus ES, a nameplate that first appeared in 1989 and has since evolved through seven transformative generations. The latest iteration brings a sleek design and advanced technologies, reinforcing the model’s presence in the midsize luxury sedan segment and positioning it more competitively in a market rapidly shifting toward innovation and sustainability.

Dynamic Design Reflecting the Spirit of the Times

Lexus embraced a more fluid and assertive design language for the eighth generation ES. The vehicle’s coupe like sloping roofline adds a strikingly sporty character, while sharp side contours and detailed wheel arches enhance its bold and lively appearance.

At the front, Lexus replaced the traditional open grille with a closed off panel that emphasizes the car’s electric identity. Sleek LED headlamps with an L-shaped signature light pattern introduce a fresh visual identity, while the emblem has been moved to the top of the hood for a cleaner, more aerodynamic profile.

Around the rear, the new ES features a modern, connected taillight design stretching across the vehicle’s width, giving it a futuristic look. The trunk lid incorporates a subtle ducktail element, offering a refined balance of elegance and sportiness.

Advanced Cabin and Versatile Powertrain Options

Inside the latest generation of the Lexus ES, the brand’s commitment to delivering a modern and interactive driving experience is unmistakable. The cabin features a dual screen setup in the front row, taking inspiration from leading Chinese EV brands. This layout reflects Lexus' shift toward fully digital interfaces designed to resonate with younger drivers and tech savvy users.

Lexus has announced three powertrain options for this new model: the ES350h hybrid and two fully electric variants, the ES350e and ES500e. The ES500e, offering the highest level of equipment, is expected to serve as the luxury flagship of the lineup.

Performance wise, the new ES comes with a variety of drivetrain choices, including naturally aspirated 2.0 liter and 2.5 liter engines, as well as a hybrid setup that combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor delivering a combined output of up to 160 kW. Transmission options include a standard CVT, an advanced E-CVT, and an 8 speed automatic, giving drivers the flexibility to choose according to their preferred driving style.

The interior also benefits from enhanced sound insulation and upgraded materials, along with refined design elements such as translucent bamboo panels that add an elegant, artistic touch to the cabin’s serene and premium ambiance.

Solid Competition and a Decisive Step Toward the Future

As a midsize luxury sedan, the Lexus ES competes directly with segment heavyweights like the BMW 5 Series, Jaguar XFL, and Volvo S90. Despite the fierce competition, Lexus maintains consistent pricing across markets, unlike rivals that frequently resort to heavy discounting, potentially impacting brand perception and residual value.

This latest generation of the ES represents a pivotal milestone in Lexus’ electrification journey, with the brand aiming to become an all electric carmaker by 2035. This transition is supported by the opening of a new Lexus factory in Shanghai, which will initially produce electric models tailored for the Chinese market, aligning production with regional consumer demands.

To further solidify this direction, parent company Toyota has introduced a new RCE development strategy, empowering Chinese engineers to lead the design of future Lexus models. This initiative integrates AI and smart mobility solutions into the vehicle development process, underscoring Lexus’ intent to merge global innovation with local expertise.

With the arrival of the eighth generation ES, Lexus reinforces its standing as a key player in the luxury automotive world, blending heritage with forward thinking technology to usher in a new era defined by intelligent luxury and electrified mobility.
