Tesla has recently unveiled an updated version of the Model Y in its largest market, China. This electric vehicle is now the best-selling electric car worldwide. The update includes improvements in both interior and exterior design, as well as enhanced performance, all while keeping the price unchanged in China.
One of the most notable updates is the improved acceleration, with the rear-wheel-drive model now achieving 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, a full second faster than its previous rating. The maximum speed remains at 217 km/h. Meanwhile, the acceleration and top speed for the dual-motor versions remain unchanged from previous models.
The driving range of the vehicle has also seen a slight increase, with the base version now offering a range of 553 km on a single charge, an increase of 8 km over the previous model. At the same time, the long-range dual-motor all-wheel-drive version in China has seen an increase of 27 km, now rated at 689 km on a single charge. Despite these updates, the Performance variant remains untouched.
It is unclear what has changed in the drivetrain to improve acceleration for the rear-wheel-drive versions and achieve a longer range. However, reports from China also indicate updates to the self-driving computer and insulation. Additionally, Tesla has enhanced the vehicle's appearance by painting the wheels black, adding a touch of elegance to the exterior.
Inside, the update introduces ambient lighting as an LED strip that extends across the dashboard, similar to the lighting update in the enhanced Model 3. Notably, the wooden accents on the black dashboard in the Model Y have been replaced with a different material.
Despite these improvements, Tesla has kept the price of the base model unchanged at $36,785. A significant update to the vehicle, called Project Juniper, will be launched later, similar to the Model 3.
