As part of its bold shift toward electric mobility, Ford has unveiled two new versions of its iconic Bronco SUV in the Chinese market: a fully electric BEV and an extended range EREV variant. This launch comes as a result of a joint venture between Ford and Chinese automaker Jiangling Motors (JMC). The new Bronco is equipped with an advanced battery from tech giant BYD, delivering an impressive driving range of up to 650 kilometers based on the Chinese CLTC standard.
Bold Design and Advanced Technology
The electric Ford Bronco stays true to its rugged heritage with a bold, muscular design that commands attention on the road. With dimensions measuring 5,025 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width, and 1,815 mm in height, plus a wheelbase of 2,950 mm, it delivers full size SUV proportions. Its curb weight stands at 2,630 kg, signaling a well equipped body built for serious performance and durability.
This electric SUV rides on a full all wheel drive system, featuring a 130 kW front motor and a more powerful 202 kW motor at the rear. Together, they deliver a combined output of 232 kW, or 311 horsepower. With a top speed of 170 km/h, the electric Bronco offers sporty performance that fits its adventurous character.
Powering the vehicle is a 105.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery from BYD, capable of delivering up to 650 km of range based on China's CLTC standard. This impressive range positions the Bronco among the top contenders in the electric SUV segment.
Images leaked from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reveal a lidar unit mounted above the windshield, suggesting Ford plans to equip the Bronco with advanced driver assistance systems, potentially including semi or fully autonomous driving features. This aligns with global trends emphasizing safety and smart driving technologies in next generation vehicles.
EREV Version Combines Electric Drive with Gasoline Support
In addition to the fully electric version, Ford introduced an extended range electric vehicle (EREV) variant of the Bronco, offering an ideal solution for drivers who seek the efficiency of electric motors while ensuring long range capability through a traditional combustion engine. This version shares the same front electric motor as the all electric model, while the rear motor is slightly less powerful at 180 kW. It also comes with a smaller 43.7 kWh battery, which provides up to 220 kilometers of electric only driving range.
What truly sets this model apart is the addition of a 1.5 liter gasoline engine delivering 110 kW of power. This engine does not directly drive the wheels but acts solely as a generator to recharge the battery or support the electric motors when needed. Thanks to this integrated system, the EREV Bronco achieves a total driving range of up to 1,220 kilometers, making it highly suitable for long distance travel without frequent charging stops.
With a curb weight of around 2,510 kilograms, the EREV is slightly lighter than its all electric counterpart, yet it retains the rugged exterior design and advanced technology features that define the new Bronco lineup.
Launch Timeline and Global Expansion Plans
Ford is expected to launch the all electric Bronco in the Chinese market during the fourth quarter of 2025, according to CarNewsChina. So far, the company has not officially announced any plans for a global rollout, including markets in the GCC region, Europe, or North America.
As competition continues to heat up in the electric vehicle sector, Ford is clearly focusing its efforts on the Chinese market. The brand is leveraging its joint venture with JMC and utilizing advanced battery technology from BYD. If the Bronco EV proves successful locally, this strategy could pave the way for a future global launch.
