Mazda has showcased a special edition model inspired by its iconic MX-5 race cars. This model is set to make its debut at the Tokyo Auto Show in early January, alongside two stunning experimental race models, each equipped with numerous race-focused updates. The new MX-5 is named Mazda Spirit Racing Special Model, and it's noteworthy that Spirit Racing will become Mazda's new high-performance division, replacing the previous MazdaSpeed. Spirit Racing has been utilized since 2021 in the Japanese Taikyu racing series, and this special edition of the MX-5 will be the first road model introduced by this division. Its design is nearly identical to the prototype revealed at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Show.
Few technical details about the car are known, including where it will be sold and whether it will be Japan-only. The sole released image shows that the new edition will feature a modified front end with a new diffuser and a special badge in the grille. A range of stickers can also be seen on one of the MX-5 cars. Other changes include a new set of six-spoke black wheels paired with red brake calipers, side mirrors, and a rear wing.
There’s no word on whether Mazda Spirit Racing will benefit from any mechanical changes, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t. While modifications to the engine are not expected, updates to aspects like suspension and brakes are likely.
The event will also showcase two of Mazda's latest experimental race models. The first is known as the Mazda 3 Bio Concept, which will be presented alongside the Mazda Roadster CNF Concept based on the MX-5.
