Mercedes is diligently crafting both the internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) versions of the next-generation GLB, with the electric version recently spotted during its first testing phase. While it maintains a boxy silhouette reminiscent of its predecessor, it will feature a completely new platform and is anticipated to debut in 2026. Although the prototype is camouflaged, glimpses of the new grille design are emerging. The current GLB features a single horizontal strip across the front grille, while the new model appears to have three strips, though the grille itself doesn’t seem significantly larger. The new headlights incorporate three-pointed star-shaped LED daytime running lights, echoing the design first introduced by the CLA concept, which will become a common design feature across all next-generation Mercedes models. Additionally, a panoramic glass roof and silver roof rails are evident on this prototype.
Similar to the current model, the new GLB will maintain a large glass area, while the new taillights stretch across the rear panels. The spy shots also provide a glimpse into the interior, showcasing part of the digital instrument cluster. Mercedes is focusing on a smooth dashboard design that integrates both the instrument cluster and infotainment screens into one cohesive unit for a clean, modern look.
The new GLB will support the all-new MMA platform, which will also be used in the upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLA. The electric models will feature an 800-volt electrical architecture that will deliver an astonishing charging speed of 320 kilowatts, capable of adding around 400 kilometers of range with just 15 minutes of charging at a fast DC charging station. It’s expected that there will be at least two different battery options available, with the longer-range model potentially achieving up to 750 kilometers on a single charge.
The internal combustion engine lineup will feature a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with a small electric motor, working through an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The engine will be available in different power outputs: 134 horsepower, 161 horsepower, and 188 horsepower, with an additional 27 horsepower from the electric motor. Later, we should see a performance AMG version, likely incorporating hybrid assistance to provide extra power.
