- A New Hybrid Chapter for the Smart #5
- Sporty and Streamlined Design
- Eco Efficiency Meets Smart Technology
- Expected Launch by Late 2025
Smart is expanding its global footprint and pushing deeper into the SUV segment with the reveal of the first ever plug in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the Smart #5. Previously offered exclusively as a fully electric model, the new PHEV variant blends the flexibility of a traditional combustion engine with advanced electric powertrain technology. This move provides drivers with a more versatile and convenient driving experience, particularly in markets like China and the GCC region, where long range and energy efficiency are becoming increasingly important.
A New Hybrid Chapter for the Smart #5
Since its debut, the Smart #5 has been known as a fully electric SUV, offered in six EV-only variants with prices ranging from 229,900 (117,565 AED) to 379,900 yuan (194,271 AED) in the Chinese market. However, the newly revealed version changes the game, introducing a plug in hybrid (PHEV) system that combines a 1.5 liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a battery pack exceeding 40 kWh in capacity.
This advanced setup delivers a pure electric driving range of up to 250 km (CLTC) and a total combined range that surpasses 1600 km. It perfectly suits drivers who need to travel longer distances or lack consistent access to charging infrastructure, offering dynamic performance without the limitations of traditional electric only range anxiety.
Sporty and Streamlined Design
The Smart #5 PHEV continues to follow the brand’s Sensual Purity design philosophy, now enhanced with subtle refinements that boost aerodynamic efficiency. The side profile has been elongated and made sleeker to reduce drag and deliver a more elegant visual presence. At the rear, the vehicle retains its signature full width LED taillight bar, while new air resistant wheels further contribute to energy efficiency.
One of the standout updates is the introduction of a new exterior paint color called Star Swirl Blue, adding a distinctive and futuristic flair to the car’s appearance. In terms of dimensions, the Smart #5 PHEV measures 4705 mm in length, 1920 mm in width, and 1710 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2900 mm. These proportions place it in direct competition with models like the Lynk & Co 08 EM-P and the BYD Tang DM-i.
Eco Efficiency Meets Smart Technology
This new release marks a significant step toward reducing emissions without compromising on performance. Thanks to its large battery, the Smart #5 PHEV can handle daily commutes using electric power alone, minimizing fuel use during short urban trips. For longer journeys, the gasoline engine offers reliable backup, easing any concerns about running out of charge.
The low drag tires further boost the vehicle’s efficiency, while the hybrid system helps reduce overall fuel consumption. This makes the Smart #5 PHEV especially appealing in markets like the UAE and Saudi Arabia, where environmental regulations are increasingly strict. By blending cutting edge tech with eco-conscious engineering, the vehicle offers a practical and future ready mobility solution.
Expected Launch by Late 2025
According to data from the Chinese Ministry of Industry, the official unveiling of the new Smart #5 PHEV is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025, with initial sales starting in China. A global rollout is expected to follow, potentially reaching markets across the GCC region.
This release aligns with Smart’s new strategic direction following its joint venture between Mercedes Benz and Geely. While development and production have shifted to China, the brand continues to retain its German design heritage. With models like the Smart #1 and #3 already gaining traction, the company is aiming to expand its global footprint by appealing to drivers who seek a smart blend of high tech luxury and everyday practicality.
