Korean Brands Struggle in Saudi Arabia
According to Cartea's May sales data, Korean brands suffered significant declines in Saudi Arabia. Hyundai recorded 6,652 units with a 19.4% decline, while Kia recorded 3,159 units with a dramatic 46.4% decline. Together, these two brands lost substantial market share to both Japanese incumbents and rapidly growing Chinese challengers.
Hyundai's Decline Across Models
Hyundai's struggles affected nearly every model. The Hyundai Elantra (1,627 units, -32.0%), Hyundai Accent (1,611 units, -42.9%), Hyundai Tucson (1,319 units, -66.4%), and Hyundai Santa Fe (1,148 units, -42.1%) all suffered steep declines. Only the Hyundai Sonata (1,486 units, +18.9%) achieved growth. The Hyundai Creta (472 units, -34.6%) and Hyundai Ioniq 5 (237 units, -31.8%) also declined.
Kia's Severe Challenges
Kia's 46.4% decline is even more severe than Hyundai's. The Kia Seltos (861 units, -42.8%) and Kia Picanto (785 units, -79.0%) both suffered dramatic drops. Kia's pricing has crept upward while Chinese brands like MG and Haval offer equivalent features at lower prices. Kia's design language, once distinctive, now looks conservative compared to bold Chinese alternatives.
Chinese Brands Capitalize
While Korean brands declined, Chinese brands surged. Jetour grew 35.3%, Haval exploded 404.2%, MG rose 38.1%, and Changan maintained steady sales. Chinese brands now offer longer warranties, more features, and lower prices than Korean competitors. The shift in buyer preferences is unmistakable.
Conclusion
Korean brands face an existential challenge in Saudi Arabia. Without significant pricing adjustments, feature upgrades, or design refreshes, Hyundai and Kia may continue losing share to both Japanese reliability and Chinese value. For buyers, the decline of Korean brands means more compelling options from newer competitors.
