2023 BYD Frigate 07 in-depth Walkaround
The BYD Frigate 07, a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by Chinese automaker BYD Auto, is part of the new "Ocean Series" of plug-in electric vehicles. It represents BYD's second plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) or Extended Range EV (EREV). The Frigate 07 incorporates the DM-i hybrid technology shared with the BYD Destroyer 05, along with the performance-oriented hybrid technology (DM-p) seen in the PHEVs of the BYD Dynasty series.
Powering the BYD Frigate 07 are two variants of BYD's DM-i and DM-p hybrid EHS system (Electric Hybrid System), each with different battery sizes. Both versions feature a 1.5-liter turbocharged Xiaoyun Miller cycle petrol engine, delivering 102 kilowatts (137 hp; 139 PS) and 231 newton-meters (24 kg⋅m; 170 lb-ft) of torque. The petrol engine generates 81 kW (109 hp; 110 PS) while being supported by a 60-liter (13 imp gal; 16 US gal) fuel tank, resulting in a combined range of over 1,200 kilometers (746 mi) and a fuel economy of 5.5 liters per 100 kilometers (18.2 km/L; 51.4 mpg‑imp; 42.8 mpg‑US).
The DM-p variant, designed for enhanced performance, employs a dual-motor configuration and is equipped with a 36.8-kilowatt-hour (132 MJ) Blade lithium iron phosphate battery. This setup allows for an electric-only range of 170 kilometers (106 mi) (WLTC), producing a combined output of 295 kW (396 hp; 401 PS) and 656 N⋅m (67 kg⋅m; 484 lb-ft) of torque. On the other hand, the DM-i variant prioritizes fuel economy and features an 18.3-kilowatt-hour (66 MJ) Blade lithium iron phosphate battery. This configuration provides an electric driving range of 82 kilometers (51 mi) (WLTC) and powers a single electric motor with an output of 145 kW (194 hp; 197 PS) and 316 N⋅m (32 kg⋅m; 233 lb-ft) of torque.
In terms of dimensions, the BYD Frigate 07 exhibits a wheelbase of 2,820 mm (111.0 in), a length of 4,820 mm (189.8 in), a width of 1,920 mm (75.6 in), and a height of 1,750 mm (68.9 in).
