BYD plans to introduce a three-row version of the YangWang U8 in China, with a prototype spotted on a transport truck. The new vehicle features a longer rear and slightly extended wheelbase, aimed at competing with other luxury SUVs.
YangWang, as a luxury brand under BYD, was launched in 2023 and includes an off-road vehicle (U8) and a supercar (U9). Delivery of the latter began in late July 2024, making the U8 the best-selling model of the brand. From January to July 2024, 5,939 units were sold, with cumulative sales reaching 7,940 vehicles.
Despite an initial price of $152,600, the sales of the U8 remain strong. BYD aims to enhance the market performance of this model by launching a three-row version.
The new model has been spotted in heavy camouflage in China, with the front end remaining unchanged and featuring a large grille, distinctive daytime running lights, and a lidar sensor on the roof. It also boasts large side mirrors, retractable door handles, and a flat roof.
The expansion of the rear wheel arches indicates that the company's engineers may have lengthened the U8's wheelbase. The current five-seat version has a wheelbase of 3,050 mm, suggesting the three-row version could reach 3.2 meters. The rear appears to be longer than the current model, with a full-size spare tire mounted on the rear door.
While the seating layout has not yet been revealed, it is likely to follow a 2+2+2 design with independent seats in the second row.
Some internet users have expressed concerns that the longer version of the U8 may have less distinguished off-road capabilities. However, the five-seat model also has moderate off-road capabilities due to its hefty curb weight of 3,460 kg and a moderate approach angle. Thus, the vehicle is primarily designed for urban commuting. The three-row version is expected to be unveiled at the Chengdu Auto Show on August 30.
The U8 is based on the e-Platform 4, with dimensions of 5,319/2,050/1,930 mm (L/W/H) and a wheelbase of 3,050 mm. Its ground clearance is 285 mm, thanks to the hydraulic suspension system. The trunk space is 1,031 liters, and the interior features a 12.8-inch main display, a 23.6-inch LCD instrument cluster, a 23.6-inch passenger display, and a pair of 12.8-inch screens for rear passengers.
The vehicle's drivetrain consists of four electric motors with a combined maximum power of 1,180 horsepower and a peak torque of 1,280 Nm. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. It is powered by a 49 kWh LFP Blade battery from BYD's FinDreams. Additionally, a variant with an extended range is available, relying on a 2-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 268 horsepower. With a 75-liter fuel tank, the vehicle can achieve a range of up to 1,000 kilometers under the Chinese test cycle (CLTC).
