In a move to redefine the identity of electric sedans, Chinese automaker Xpeng has unveiled a revamped version of its P7 model. While retaining the same name, the car features significant updates to its design and overall character. This marks the first major facelift since the model’s initial launch in 2020, underscoring the company's commitment to strengthening its position in the highly competitive global electric vehicle market.
Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng announced the update on Weibo, emphasizing that the new vehicle is not a concept car but a real production model brought from the future to the present. The announcement was accompanied by four official images revealing a bold exterior design with more fluid lines and sporty elements, giving the car a stronger and more distinctive presence.
A New Sporty Coupe Identity
The official images released by Xpeng reveal a bold redesign of the P7, signaling a significant shift toward a sportier aesthetic. The new version moves away from the conservative, family oriented styling of its predecessor, adopting sharper, more elegant lines and featuring an integrated rear wing that enhances aerodynamic performance.
The design takes cues from the larger P7+ model, launched in November 2024, sharing certain front and rear elements while adding distinctive features that strengthen its coupe like character. The updated styling is credited to Rafiq Farag, Xpeng’s Head of Creative Design since 2018, who also penned the first generation P7.
P7: The Cornerstone of Xpeng's Rise
Since its debut at the Shanghai International Auto Show in 2019 and commercial launch in April 2020, the P7 has played a pivotal role in Xpeng's growth, helping to establish the brand in the electric vehicle market. The model delivered outstanding results, with over 60,000 units sold in 2021 alone, accounting for approximately 61.71% of the company's total sales that year.
Although Xpeng introduced an upgraded version, the P7i, in March 2023, the original P7 remained available for some time. However, with the start of production for the all new P7+, deliveries of the older generation have dropped to fewer than 1,000 units per month. This decline highlights the market's growing preference for updated designs and advanced technologies featured in the newer models.
Diverse Options at Competitive Prices
The starting price for the P7i in China is 249,900 yuan, approximately USD 34,650 (127,372 AED), while the P7+ starts at 186,800 yuan, approximately USD 25,900 (95,210 AED). This pricing strategy reflects Xpeng's effort to meet the diverse needs of its customers, from those seeking high performance to others prioritizing value and cutting edge technology at a more accessible price point.
With this varied lineup, Xpeng aims to broaden its footprint in the electric vehicle market by offering models that combine advanced design, sporty performance, and intelligent features without imposing premium costs. This strategy highlights the brand’s commitment to delivering innovative and distinctive driving experiences that resonate with the expectations of today’s drivers.
The Future Begins with the P7
Revamping the P7 with a new identity marks a pivotal stage for Xpeng as it focuses on delivering vehicles that embody cutting edge design and advanced electric performance. The launch of this new version signals a shift in direction, aiming to strengthen the brand’s position in the sports sedan segment, particularly appealing to GCC drivers who value distinctive performance and a bold road presence.
