In the current electric vehicle market, stagnation means being left behind, and the latest initiative by SAIC-GM-Wuling is well aware of this. They have launched the all-new five-door version of the Hong Guang Mini EV, showcasing a streamlined appearance that completely overturns its previous boxy shape.
Since its launch in 2020, this electric vehicle series has accumulated over 1.4 million sales in the Chinese market. However, the increasing number of competitors has led to a decline in sales, forcing the company to undertake a comprehensive redesign.
The new car has abandoned the traditional boxy design in favor of a more streamlined appearance, with the headlight design and curves inspired by BYD's larger super mini electric vehicles, while also featuring compact 13-inch wheels.
The most notable change is undoubtedly the addition of a five-door version, greatly enhancing practicality compared to the still-available three-door model. Both models share the same front and rear design, making the side profile the only distinguishing feature.
Larger Dimensions and Better Space
Regardless of the body shape, the new model measures 3256mm in length, 1510mm in width, and 1578mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2190mm. This makes it 336mm longer than the previous three-door model, with an additional 250mm between the axles.
Inside, the redesigned dashboard includes two separate screens, physical climate control knobs on the center console, and a gear selector between the seats. The extended wheelbase results in a more spacious cabin, particularly benefiting rear passengers.
The new model retains a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 40 horsepower, the same as the most powerful version of the previous Mini EV. Power is supplied by a lithium iron phosphate battery, with an unspecified capacity. While range figures remain uncertain, the current model offers up to 280 kilometers with the largest available 26 kWh battery, so expectations for the new model are likely within a similar range.
