Xpeng, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, is expanding its lineup of electric sedans with a new sports coupe that features bold, innovative design elements. Rafik Ferrag, Head of Creative Design at Xpeng, offered a first glimpse of the eagerly awaited model, internally codenamed E29, which is expected to be officially named the P7 Ultra.
A Fresh Identity for Xpeng's Sporty Design
Rafik Farag unveiled the first glimpse of Xpeng’s new coupe through a video on Instagram, showcasing its sleek side profile and sharp contours that emphasize its revitalized sporty character. The design marks a departure from the family oriented aesthetics typical of Xpeng’s current lineup, focusing instead on bold visual appeal and a dynamic driving experience aimed at drivers who seek modern electric performance.
While drawing inspiration from the P7+, a mid to large sedan introduced in November 2024, the new coupe distinguishes itself with unique styling cues. Most notably, it features an integrated rear wing that improves aerodynamics and lends the car a more aggressive presence compared to other models in the brand’s range.
Returning to Roots with a Fresh Perspective
Farag expressed his pride in designing this new model, marking six years since he first contributed to Xpeng’s design direction with the launch of the P7 in 2020. He noted that the new coupe represents a bold departure in design philosophy, embodying a futuristic vision aimed at redefining aesthetics and driving dynamics in electric vehicles.
Farag joined Xpeng in 2017 following notable design roles at Citroën and Honda. While specific technical details of the new model remain undisclosed, internal sources suggest it will offer exceptional performance and a distinctive design poised to set a new benchmark for electric coupes.
P7 Ultra Steps Confidently into High Performance
In February, Xpeng applied to trademark the name P7 Ultra, reinforcing expectations that this will be the official name of its upcoming model. The term Ultra is commonly used in China’s electric vehicle market to signify high performance variants, much like Xiaomi’s SU7 Ultra, which boasts 1,548 horsepower.
While current Xpeng sedans such as the Mona M03, P7+, and P7i are geared toward family use, the forthcoming coupe represents a strategic shift toward performance focused driving without compromising on technology or luxury. This direction aligns with the rising global demand for sporty, high tech electric vehicles.
According to April sales data, Xpeng delivered 35,045 vehicles, marking its second best month ever, just behind the December 2024 record of 36,695 units. The Mona M03 led with 14,210 units sold, followed by the P7+ with 7,392 units. With the P7 Ultra’s debut on the horizon, the model is expected to attract a new customer segment and further strengthen Xpeng’s position in the competitive EV landscape.
All eyes are now on the official unveiling of this much anticipated model, which promises an advanced driving experience paired with bold, futuristic design. With the P7 Ultra, Xpeng signals that the future is not merely approaching, it is here, ready to redefine what performance and innovation mean in the EV world.
