Nissan is navigating one of the most challenging phases in its history, facing significant financial strain and large scale structural changes aimed at redefining its position in the global automotive market. After years of instability, the Japanese automaker appears ready for a powerful comeback through a comprehensive reform strategy led by its new CEO, whose passion for sports cars lies at the heart of this revival. The question remains: can Nissan turn this crisis into a new beginning?

New Leadership and a Clear Vision

The transformation begins at the top with the appointment of Ivan Espinosa as CEO in April 2025, a passionate car enthusiast who drives his own Nissan Z to work every day. With over two decades of experience within the company, Espinosa brings a deep understanding of Nissan’s inner workings and culture.

He introduced a broad recovery roadmap known as “Re:Nissan”, designed to rebuild the company on stronger foundations through seven key pillars:

  • Reducing variable costs.

  • Cutting fixed expenses.

  • Restructuring manufacturing plants and improving operational efficiency.

  • Streamlining the global workforce.

  • Revamping research and development operations.

  • Redefining product and market strategy.

  • Strengthening partnerships with other automakers.

Implementation of the plan has already begun through decisive actions. Nissan announced the closure of seven production facilities worldwide, reducing its manufacturing footprint from 17 plants to just 10 by 2028. The closures include sites in Japan and Mexico, as well as design studios in the United States and Brazil. Additionally, two upcoming electric sedan projects for the US market were canceled due to shifting industry conditions and declining EV demand.

In the research and development sector, over 3,000 employees have been reassigned to cost reduction projects, while the company targets 1.7 billion dollars in operational savings by 2027. These drastic yet strategic measures are being led by financial expert Tatsuzo Tomita, nicknamed the “Cost Czar,” who is scrutinizing every detail of spending, even small components such as headrests, to achieve efficiency at every level.

Positive Results and the Return of Confidence

Despite strict cost cutting measures and major restructuring, Nissan’s efforts began to bear fruit in 2025, particularly in the US market. The company launched the Nissan One program, which offers financial incentives to dealers who exceed their sales targets. This strategy led to a 2.2% increase in overall sales compared to the previous year, reaching more than 463,000 vehicles sold.

These results highlight a renewed sense of confidence in the Nissan brand, particularly among enthusiasts who value performance and design. The company’s focus on practical and affordable models like the Kicks and Versa has also strengthened its overall market position.

Nissan’s Future Between Ambition and Heritage

Looking ahead, Nissan is preparing a wave of new models designed to strengthen its lineup and reignite excitement among fans:

The company has also confirmed that a new generation of the legendary GT-R is already under development, reassuring fans that Nissan’s performance legacy remains alive.

While earlier reports suggested that the next GT-R might go fully electric, shifting market trends now hint that Nissan could retain a combustion engine, catering to drivers who crave the visceral experience of traditional power. With a true car enthusiast like Ivan Espinosa at the helm, the passion for performance remains at the core of Nissan’s comeback vision.

A Hopeful Look Toward the Future

Nissan’s recent actions make it clear that the company has no intention of backing down from its challenges. Instead, it aims to build a future that strikes a better balance between efficiency and performance identity. While some automakers are pulling away from their commitment to driving excitement, Nissan appears determined to return to its roots, guided by bold decisions and leadership that truly believes in cars designed to ignite passion behind the wheel.

The current crisis may seem difficult, but for Nissan, it is not the end, it marks the beginning of a new chapter in the story of a brand that has always known how to rise again in an ever evolving automotive world.
